Public and Private Space

A COMMENT ON THE EXERCISE BASED ON PROF. FEDERICO SORIANO'S CHARACTERIZATION

This has been one of several activities we are planning with our exchange Professors María and Ciro, so as to provide you with additional tools of thought and expression for your design work.

You may have realized that concept weakness is a general problem. One of the reasons is that the ideas we use are always too generic. In this exercise, If you seriously think about public and private wide range of characteristics, and the possibility to grade them and create balances and unbalances between contraries (as full-empty), you will find a great lot of new possibilities for thinking, defining and explaining your project.

The interesting thing here is that there were not right or wrong answers. The importance lies on thinking seriously about the complexity of things, and how to control it. The answer actually is secondary, the interest lies on the question and the discussion (both public and internal, within yourself).

Some students understood it this way, and were very excited with the exercise. Others thought it as a loss of time. Of course you are free to see it your own way. We (teachers) know that improving tools for though and expression has a very positive impact in the quality and enjoyment of design work.

Public and Private space:
Public space is mobile. Private space is static. Public space is disperse  Private space is compact. Public space is empty, it is imagination. Private space is full, it is objects and memories. Public space is indeterminate. Private space is functional..Public space is information, private space is opinion. Public space is the medium. Private space is the message. Public space is, in one word, unstable.  Private space is stable by nature.
